Menindee

On to Menindee for our fourth night, our two previous nights were spent in Mildura but with no connections to the expedition as the town did not exist in 1860.  Again we stayed at the Burke and Wills Motel, which is across the road from Maidens Hotel where the explorers had rooms that have since been destroyed by fire. However, each end of the bar is designated Burke and Wills and we enjoyed an excellent evening meal there.

The campsite at Pamamaroo Creek, which took them almost two months to reach, seemed a depressing place even in the coolness of winter. Maybe because of its association with the splitting of the expedition causing the supply party to remain there unable for various reasons to support the advance party. Both were major factors in causing the death of expedition members as well as its leaders.
