Originally a Savage Dolphin then named Deltacraft Angler

Hi Tom, Hopefully you may be able to assist?

I purchased a 16ft open “runabout” displacement hull boat the other week from an auction. (see attached pictures)

I have looked high and low on the internet for reference to this boat but so far with no luck.

Information I had is the it was made by Dealtry here in Adelaide in the early 1980’s, but I can find no reference or pictures of and thing similar in the Dealtry range.

While trolling the internet again during my lunch I came across 16ft half cabin Deltacraft Angler, the hull and deck features look very similar to my boat.

Just wondering if you know whether Deltacraft did make a boat like mine around these times.

Steve replied:-
Yes we did indeed manufacture this shape back in the 80's, it was the same as Tom has on the Delta club site. Originally known as the "Savage Dolphin", it was a successful little full displacement hull flat out at around 6 knots regardless of power.

It was strongly built by Savage and later by us at Deltacraft unfortunately I cant say which company actually built it unless there is a builders plate on it (usually near the right hand side forward.)

They are quite seaworthy and with a little Diesel installed instead of an outboard have a very long life and are very serviceable. As a Deltacraft they generally came equipped with a half cabin.

The design was overtaken by planing hulls eventually but this boat is very good for trawling and uses very little fuel. Appreciate the full displacement aspect and you will appreciate this beaut little Craft.

See full displacement explanation on the Club site.

I know of the Savage Dolphin because Sea Scouts in SA had one set up for sailing ( it was late sixties vintage ) we used it mainly for a safety boat

With a 10 hp outboard on it, for which it was not suitable because we required something a lot faster and I eventually traded it for a 5m Quintrex runabout.

In the last year I purchased a property on the Murray and intend to enjoy the water way a lot more so when this boat came along I though it would be ideal.

As you say slipping along at 5 knots does very much appeal to me as I am indeed not in rush to get anywhere.

All good, finally got the boat in the water over the October long weekend.

Fitted it with a 10HP Johnson off my tinnie for the moment and it steamed along fantastic, took her for a run along the Walker Flat cliffs for a couple of hours.

I recently purchased a high torque 8HP 4 stroke Yamaha long shaft with forward controls so hope to get this power plant up and running real soon.

If all going to plan should have the new motor on before Christmas time so we can spend some enjoyable hours just cruising!

A picture from my first outing.
