The Dig Tree site shown in the top two photographs, is very well maintained but to me the white chain fence around the site, white picnic tables and the board walk up to the tree detracted from the natural setting. Why one is encouraged to walk up to it and touch it I find surprising, recent damage to one of the blaze marks was apparent. Obviously the trees general health is well looked after, manifested by the boards and indications of insecticide being used. However, I feel close access should be discouraged by some simple fence and the natural vegetation encouraged to regenerate.

In contrast the cairn at the site of Burkes death was in a beautiful natural and unspoilt setting. With the car park over 100yds away and a pleasant creek side path through the trees it is perhaps a good example how the Dig Tree and Wills sites should be treated.
