Deltacraft Launches The First Genesis

Last Saturday (3 Dec) saw the launch of the long anticipated new version of the Deltacraft cruiser in Sydney. Over 30 years ago the Deltacraft was Australia’s most popular ‘pocket’ displacement cruiser and the new model rekindles the same concept in a much improved version.

The Sydney-built fibreglass cruiser raft drew a large crowd to the Bayview launch, including a big contingent of the Deltacraft owners club.

Steve Leonard who was also the builder of the original Deltacraft paid tribute to all those who have been involved in new model that measures seven metres overall and runs on a small thrifty Volvo Penta D1 diesel. He and partner John Gale are responsible for the new boat that is built on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

At the launch Leonard said the need for a boat that operated at slow, relaxed pace is probably even stronger today than ever because of high fuel costs and environmental concern. This is why he and his new partner decided to ‘relaunch’ the Deltacraft because there really wasn’t anything quite like it on the market.

There were over 670 of the original Deltacraft launched and virtually all those are still actively used on waterways around Australia.

The new Deltacraft retains a traditional appearance like the earlier model, however incorporates many modern touches. It has a Volvo DI 20hp diesel that delivers a smooth eight knots and retains the same top speed whether full loaded or not. The heavy displacement fibreglass hull is incredibly tough and feels very steady and smooth in the water.

The new boat has a fully-moulded rear landing platform plus walk-through transom door.  These features plus a number of other improvements make the craft a valid successor to the original concept.

A large crowd of guests raised their champagne and orange drinks to the official christening in sunny, summer weather. Later they were able to inspect the new boat and go for a run. Below there is generous standing headroom, a complete galley, comfortable dinette, Vee double berth and enclosed toilet/bathroom with hot water shower.

A double-sealed engine box ensures the motor is whisper quiet and a big improvement over earlier generation Deltacraft’s.

Price of new Deltacraft is approximately $74,800 with GST paid and in-water commissioning in Sydney waters. A special deluxe model, the Platinum is also expected soon with luxurious fit-out and larger D1 30hp diesel motor package.
