Christmas In Australia, a song

These are the words of a song titled "Christmas In Australia" as played by "The Irish Drovers" on Sydney radio stations in December 1987. I located this note and the below words on a web site titled The Mudcat Cafe

There was no snow in the Outback,
When Baby Jesus was born that night.
Just a mother singing dreamtime,
Saw the shining star so bright.
Now the children in the cities,
Are hanging lights upon the trees,
When it's Christmas in Australia,
Bringing joy to you and me.

When it's Christmas in Australia,
The So'thern Cross shines bright,
From Darwin to Tasmania,
On a joyful Christmas night.

They'll be ringing bells in Adelaide,
And Perth will shine her lights,
Singing carols all through Queensland,
On that warm December night.
On Melbourne streets, at Sydney-town,
The jacaranda blossoms lie,
A purple mantle across Australia,
Beneath our so'thern sky.

When it's Christmas in Australia,
The So'thern Cross shines bright,
From Darwin to Tasmania,
On a joyful Christmas night.

The farmer and the cityfolk,
All bow their heads and pray,
To Little Baby Jesus,
Born long ago and far away.
Just an infant in a manger,
Who'll fill the world with love and joy,
When it's Christmas in Australia,
Peace to every girl and boy.

When it's Christmas in Australia,
The So'thern Cross shines bright,
From Darwin to Tasmania,
On a joyful Christmas night.

Ringing bells across Australia
On a joyful Christmas night.

During October 2007 I received a request from England for a copy of the sheet music or a midi file to provide the tune. I asked two or three friends and acquaintances for the music but none could locate a copy. A friend then offered to write a tune to suit the words which paint a nice picture of Australia at Christmas.

When he started he thought that the metre of the words was not suitable for choirs or bands. They did seem to suit a small group such as the Irish Drovers.

He then amended a few words and completed a tune. If you wish I can email you a pdf file of the sheet music he produced.

For other options see the item at 18 October 2008 further down the page.

The revised words are:-

There was no snow in the Outback,
The night of Jesus birth.
Just a mother singing dreamtime,
Saw the brightest star on earth.
Now the children in the cities,
Are hanging lights on trees,
It's Christmas in Australia,
Bringing joy to you and me.

Refrain
When it's Christmas in Australia,
The Southern Cross shines bright,
From Darwin to Tasmania,
On a joyful Christmas night.

They'll be ringing bells in Adelaide,
And Perth will shine her lights,
With carols all through Queensland,
On that warm December night.
On Melbourne streets and Sydney-town,
The jacaranda lie,
A purple haze across this land,
Beneath our southern sky.

The farmers and the town-folk,
Will bow their heads and pray,
To Little Baby Jesus,
Who was born so far away.
Just an infant in a manger,
Who'll fill the world with joy,
It's Christmas in Australia,
Peace to every girl and boy.

Ringing bells across Australia
On a joyful Christmas night.

The request from England was from the Salvation Army in Clevedon and we have exchanged many emails to bring this project to finality.
On 28 December 2007 we received a package from the UK which included details of the 'World' premier of the 'Christmas In Australia' carol, by The Salvation Army, Clevedon Corps.

The Band in action Another Band photo

These photos show the event which was held on the 2 December 2007.

The Corps Organising Secretary reports as follows:-

The whole afternoon was a great success and raised over £660 for North Somerset Parkinsons Disease Society.

On the 9 December the Clevedon Carol Festival was held, and once again the Carol went down very well, and again, we had an Australian in the congregation.

As a result of the work by the Salvation Army we now have in both England and Australia a copy of the score for a band. Should you need a copy, don't hesitate to contact us.

Finally and explanation of some of the words in the carol.

18 October 2008 - I received an email from Bill saying :-
I can send you an mp3 of this song as recorded by The Irish Drovers.
It duly arrived.
I know it is very naughty and perhaps Santa won't come to me this year but I have placed a copy of the file on my site. Click to Download Christmas In Australia mp3 file.

September 2009 - I received an email advising that the Christmas in Australia song was written by Diana Trask and Tim O'Connor and will be re-released shortly by Diana Trask on her official website www.dianatrask.com.

30 December 2009 Hi Tom, Thank you so much for this music. We had our "ANZ Carols Service" on the morning of December 20th, using "Christmas in Australia" as our opening carol. This was a great day, with all Australian and New Zealand Carols and songs, and the readings, etc. set in the context of a play, telling the story of Christmas in Australia from Tasman's naming of three King Islands, through early settlement, world wars, etc. up until the present. It was a great day, and months of practice beforehand of all these new carols really paid off.

We then used "Christmas in Australia" to open our Christmas Eve Family service.

So as you can see, all your hard work for us was really worthwhile, and much appreciated.

Thanks again, and I hope you had a great Christmas, and have a happy and healthy New Year.

Blessings, John Tongue, Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
