From Peter - About Manchester and the Pennines. If you look out the window and the mountains seem close, it's a sure sign that rains not far away. If you look out and you can't see the mountains, it's already raining!"
From Peter - In Birmingham England, it is said that:-
If you could smell the chocolate from Cadbury's factory it was going to rain.
This must be fairly recent, as the factory was only built in about 1840. I suppose it was based on the wind being in a particular direction, or a heavy atmosphere holding the smell near the ground.
From Gary - If ice in November will stand a duck, all you'll get later is slush and muck.
His great grand dad lived in the East Midlands of England and this was one of his favourite saying.
Its meaning was that a mild winter will follow.
