Further Notes - Tracing Family History in the United Kingdom

In June 2000, the following situation existed and may be of assistance in tracing ancestors in that country.

1. In 1837, the parliament passed the Registration Act enquiring all births, deaths and marriages to be registered with the Registry Office. Before this, each Church kept a register of christenings, marriages and funerals. This register was not compulsory and there may be omissions.

2. Commencing in 1841 a census was taken at ten-year intervals and many of the documents still exist.

3. The Family Records Centre is at Myddelton Place, Myddelton Street, London. EC2. Their records for England and Wales only go back to 1837.

4. The official records for Scotland are kept at New Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh. Certificates of births, deaths and marriages since 1855 are available.

5. The official records for Ireland are kept at the Genealogical Office, 2 Kildare Street, Dublin or the General Register Office, 49 Chichester Street, Belfast.

6. The Society of Genealogists at 14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road, London EC1 M7BA has an excellent library, containing copies of a vast number of parish registers in England and Wales, which visitors can inspect for a fee.

7. Many of the small villages and towns have a Historical Society, which has indexed copies of the local Church registers and the census forms.

8. The Registry Office at Exeter, Devon was providing a search service at the price of 15 pounds per hour, including VAT, with no guarantee of success. Similar services are available in other areas.

9. The Mormon Church Family History organisation is attempting to load all old Church registers into its Family History database. Some Bishops were not allowing this copying but since centralistion, this problem has been overcome. The work is stated to be approximately 60% completed.

10. Army Records prior to 1913 are at the Public Records Office, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, RICHMOND, Surrey. TW9 4DU. Records from 1913 to date are at The Army Records Office, Bourne Avenue, HAYES, Middlesex.
