Descendants of Ann Harris

Third Generation

6. William Henry Wills (John Wills , Ann ) was born in 1849 in Surry Hills. He died on 20 Oct 1913 in Sans Souci. He was buried in Woronora Cemetery.

William is listed in the Sands Directory in 1869, at age 20, as a bootmaker in Nelson St Waverley. In 1876 and 1877 his brothers, Albert and James, respectively, become also listed as bootmakers in Nelson St Waverley.. Thus bootmaking was at least the initial profession of three of the four brothers. It is not known if the three brothers worked in the same business or had separate bootmaking operations; but it is suspected that Albert and James joined with William in the same business when they commenced work.

William remains a bootmaker throughout his working life. However, in 1879, he moves to Wallis St Woollahra which would be near Primrose Cottage where John Wills lived at the time of his death in 1860. In 1891, William moves to 79 Darling St Balmain and is listed in 1901 as 207 Darling St probably due to street re-numbering. In 1901, another William H., probably William’s son who would have been 21 is also listed as a bootmaker at 711 Darling St Balmain. It would seem likely that they worked in the same business but had different residences. The listing of the son coincides with his marriage in 1902 to Emily Stone. In 1906, it would seem that the son remains at 711 Darling St (now Rozelle) and the father moves to 141 Salisbury Rd Stanmore.

William (senior) retires in 1910 and moves to Park St Sans Souci, possibly to be near his daughter Amy who marries in 1910 and lives at Northcote St Sans Souci. He died at Sans Souci in 1913 aged 64 from throat cancer. He is the only son not buried at Waverley but is interred at Woronora cemetery.

William married Sarah Jane Anderson daughter of Samuel Anderson and Sarah A in 1873 in Waverley. Sarah was born in 1852. She died in 1923 in Sydney.

They had the following children:

32 F i Elizabeth Wills was born in 1874 in Paddington. She died in 1950 in Kogarah.
+ 33 F ii Ethel J Wills
34 M iii William Henry Wills was born in 1880. He died in 1959 in Rockdale.

In 1901, William H. Wills is listed in the Sands Directory as a bootmaker at 711 Darling St Balmain. It would seem likely that he worked in the same business as his father but had a different residence. The listing of the William coincides with his marriage in 1902 to Emily Stone.

In 1906, it would seem that William remains at 711 Darling St (now Rozelle) and his father moves to 141 Salisbury Rd Stanmore.

7. Albert Charles Wills (John Wills , Ann ) was born on 28 Dec 1850. He died on 25 Oct 1917 in Waverley.

Albert, along with his brothers James and George, all live in Waverley close to their mother Elizabeth at some time up to the early 1890’s. The three sons and Elizabeth live in separate houses on the John Wills original land holding bounded by Macpherson St and Leichhardt St.

In 1876 Albert become also listed in the Sands Directlry as a bootmaker in Nelson St Waverley. It is suspected that Albert and James joined with the eldest brother William in the same business.

The listing of Albert coincide with his marriage in 1875 to Emma Franklin a and probably reflects that he left Elizabeth’s house to set up his own family home. His first child, Amy was born in 1876.

However, in mid-1880s Albert has discarded bootmaking to become a greengrocer in Leichhardt St, Waverley. Albert stays in Macpherson St until his death in 1917 aged 65.

Albert married Emma Louisa Franklin daughter of Henry Franklin and Louisa Horsley in 1875 in Paddington. Emma was born on 23 Mar 1853 in Essex, England. She died on 24 Dec 1899 in Randwick.

In 1877 James become listed in the Sands directory as a bootmaker in Nelson St Waverley. It is suspected that James joined with his eldest brother William in the same business. The listings James coincide with the marriage in 1875 to Monica Carroll and probably reflect that he left his mother's house to set up his own family homes. Their first child John was born in 1875.

James leaves Waverley in the early 1890’s but appears to be on the move as he is listed in the Sands Directory at Woollahra in 1893, Dulwich Hill in 1895, Camperdown in 1897, Newtown in 1901 and Marrickville in 1902 but remains a bootmaker.

1908 sees the listing in the Sands Directory of James Wills & Co as bootmakers at 124 King St Newtown. The company employs most of James’ children early in their working life with James, Walter, George (Dealer), Ruby, Albert (Mate), Vina (Duck) and Elsie known to have worked in the Newtown factory in 1911. The company ceases to exist in 1920 and James then aged 67, retires to live at Smith St , Wentworthville.

James lost the business when he was bankrupted by a businessman who was owed £400. It is claimed that when the businessman called for payment of the debt James was away on a shooting trip with three of his sons and while Monica actually had the money to pay the debt, she was uncooperative and withheld payment as she did not like the behaviour of the businessman. It would seem that this was when James also lost his land holding at Waverley. The bootmaking business is re-established under the ownership of sons, particularly James Porter Jnr..

Other property at Cecil St Blackheath was retained as it was in Monica’s name. James dies in 1940 aged 86 with the death certificate recording the cause as senility and dementia.

James married 1 Monica Carroll daughter of Patrick Carroll and Caroline Stone on 15 Jul 1875 in Wooloomooloo. Monica was born on 22 Jul 1856 in Sydney. She died 2 on 27 Jan 1949 in Wentworthville. She was buried 3 on 28 Jan 1949 in C of E Cemetry Waverley.

James Porter Wills and Monica Carroll were married in July 1875 at age 21 and 19, respectively. They gave birth to 12 children, 10 of whom survived to adulthood. The birth of their children spanned 24 years from 1876 to 1900. At the brith of the last child, James and Monica were then aged 46 and 44, respectively. The first 9 children were born at Waverley with the Vina born at Albion Park, possibly when the parents were on holidays and the two youngest, Elsie and Baden, were born at Newtown.

12. George Edmund Joiner Wills (John Wills , Ann ) was born on 30 Apr 1860 in Sydney. He died on 1 Jul 1919.

George Wills is the only son of John Wills and Elizabeth Porter who does not become a bootmaker. He is listed in 1885 edition of the Sands Directory as a carpenter at Wallis St Woollahra, which is near his brother William and possibly at Primrose Cottage. This would seem to be establishing a family residence he marries Mary Jane Robinson in 1883 with the birth of their first child George Edmund in 1884.

In 1887, George moves to Clyde Cottage at Leichhardt St Waverley on the Elizabeth Wills land holding. In 1896, George moves from Waverley, probably to join the fire brigade. He is listed at fire stations in the city at 215 Castlereagh St and then at Stanmore Rd, Marrickville. In 1908, he becomes the Officer-In-Charge. of the Metropolitan Fire Board Station at North Sydney, a position he holds until 1915.
