Caprice, a 45ft. sloop-rigged racing yacht built by Mr. V. O. Innes for the vice-conunodore of the Huon Yacht Club (Mr. C. H. Calvert), was launched at Cygnet on Saturday.
The craft, which was christened by Mr. Calvert, was designed by Mr. Robert Clark, prominent yacht designer, of England.
It has a 31ft. length water line, 10ft. beam, and 6ft. 4in. draught.
The Caprice was taken to Waterloo moorings by power, and will be rigged for the opening of the club's season at Shipwrights Point on Saturday.
Two years ago Mr. Calvert sold the cruiser Ventura, in which he won many races.
He sailed the Mermaid, owned by Mr. B. Sharp, before he had Caprice built.
Australian Boating magazine July 1965 issue Cinderella boat of the Admiral's Cup Series was Australia's Caprice of Huon, a 13-year-old lady who beat all her modern sisters from eight countries in three consecutive races. Built single-handedly in three years by a Tasmanianwho was 78 when he started. Caprice was completed in 1952 from blueprints that dated back to 1939. Though long since outbuilt, she was superbly tuned and sailed by Skipper Gordon Ingate and his blue-ribbon crew. What an inspiration to all owners of old boats.
