Christmas Postage Stamps

Each year Australia Post issue a series of Christmas postage stamps to facilitate the mailing of Christmas greeting cards to friends, at a reduced postage rate. In the early 1960's I commenced saving postage stamps with the intention that one wet day when I am old I would assemble them into albums. There was a wet day in November 2000 but I am not old yet as I am only 68, however I did sort through the stamps and displayed here are some of the Christmas stamps from that accumulation.

I have just added the 2014 Christmas stamps to the display, but I am not old yet. This display covers 56 years. Guess how old I was when I started this collection.

The 2007 Christmas stamp issue celebrates its 50th anniversary by utilising classic designs from previous Christmas stamp issues.

One of the 2008 designs depicts the red crabs, birds and butterflies of Christmas Island which is a a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It is located 2600 kilometres (1600 miles) northwest of Perth, WA.

In December 2013 some of the Christmas Card envelopes were coloured red. I scanned one of these and found it made an excellent border for the stamp. I then carefully removed the other stamps from their white envelopes and scanned them on a red background.

In January 2015 I visited our local library and noticed on the "New Additions" table a book titled Stamps of Australia (ISBN 978 0 9873386 4 8 ) and decided to take it out on loan, for no real reason except I thought it would be interesting to look through the history of stamps in Australia.

I discovered that the first Christmas stamp was issued in Australia on 6th November 1957. My list above starts with the 1959 stamp. Just to provide a record of the early years I copied from eBay the 1957 and 1958 stamps and displayed them here.
